Part 199

Part the One Hundred Ninety Ninth: Hope is Blown Away

Hope’s eyes fell on the chest Abigail had brought into the cabin after they attacked the Little Plate Fleet.

She felt her throat constrict, her breath get shallow, and her hands shake.

She went to her knees and felt like crying.

She stopped wanting to cry and got to pulling the rest of Abigail’s papers together for the growing fire in the cabin.  Everything she could find, she threw on the fire.

Every so often, her eyes would land on the chest.  And she would freeze as she stared.

By the fifth immobilizing glance, she finally noticed that the fire she built had gotten out of control, consuming the table.

The fire.  Burning it all away…

No, not all; Hope reached for her cittern, wanting to keep something.

She stared at her instrument, trying not to look at the chest again-

Coughing.  The air, full of smoke-

Hope left the cabin; tried to scream about the fire, the possible loss of the ship-

No, not possible.

Likely.

Certain, yes.

Fire, no matter; no difference.

Cries, cries of pain, cries of anger, not a lot of cries to Heaven.

Didn’t expect any from crew of Gale.

Can’t cry; worthless now.  And still too much smoke in throat.

Quarterdeck; nowhere else to be when the end comes.

However soon that-

Half way up steps.  Abigail, need to get-

Smoke from Casa; maybe-

No, not from Casa; from her guns-

Blast.  Shake.  Flight.

Deck under her feet, far under her feet.

Sky above, below, above.  Tumbling over and over-

Sky, water, sky, water, water-
