Part 209

Part the Two Hundred Ninth: Ande Ay Amor, Ay Dolor

Hope said nothing until she heard the door to the house close.

“What are you doing here?” she asked Samuel.  “How did you get here?”

“I sailed?” he replied.

“No, no, I mean- No, I mean, what are you doing here, sorry.”

“I left for Port Royal three days after you departed.  I had to meet with our trading partners here concerning a number of matters, in particular arrangements for meeting the price of the letter of marque.”

“But you said you had the means for that,” Hope said, surprised.

Si, we do, but His Excellency de Bastardo, he insisted on it in specie the day you left port.  Our word was not good enough, he insisted on having it under lock and key, which left us under a lot of pressure.  So I had to come here to see if some of our investments have matured enough to deal with our needs for hard funds.”

“My whole-  the entire seven stone worth?”

“Yes, oy!” Samuel said with rolled eyes.  “And soon after that, there were the little things, the inquiries by the Governor’s men in the taverns trying to see what we had left.  We couldn’t tell if he was looking to see if we were holding something back from him or suddenly destitute, but either conclusion by him would mean more problemas either way, so that’s why I came here.”

She felt his hands tighten on her as he said that.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.  “Something happened when you got here?”

“When I got here, I explained my arrangements back home, and why we did.  And when I mentioned La Pequeña Flota de Plato, I was told different from what we were told.”

“I don’t understand, what do you mean?”

“The sources we had,” Samuel said, “some of the captains we trade with who have their ears in such places.  What they told us, no one here in Port Royal could confirm.  The fact that all of them were mistaken, that’s of great concern.”

“Oh Samuel,” Hope said as she hugged him harder.  She fought hard the impulse to go beyond hugs as she gripped him hard, and he responded with hugs of his own.

“I could not believe it,” he said as he looked into her eyes.  “I felt foolish, completamente tonto, when they told me they hadn’t heard about the Little Plate Fleet.  I need to find out what happened, how this came to pass.”

Her feelings, his news and her journey into his arms overwhelmed her…

Her lips found his, and like a boarding party they stormed hard and seized.

He pulled away in shock.

“Please, don’t,” said Hope.  “You have no idea how much I want to- I can’t tell you how much I need you, how much I… I…”

Qué es esto Samuel?

She felt his hands let go of her immediately and his arms around her slacken.  She glanced to the side and finally saw the group of men in the hall, one with a long white beard and a shocked look on his face.

With a quick jerk she let go of Samuel and tried to give a dignified little curtsey to the men of the house.

“Don Hedrnando,” said Samuel. “Uh…”

The white-bearded gentleman gave Hope a withering gaze…

  1. Before anyone complains about my Spanish in the title: This is actually a Ladino proverb, translated as, “Where there is love, there is pain.” My thanks to Rabbi Peter Schweitzer for the proverb, which as I did this part became the obvious choice for the title.
