Going on the Account: Action Off the Coast of Somalia?

Not one to pass along scuttlebutt, but word is that there’s been action with that shipment of tanks seized in Somalia

A few things to note: The action was observed by those aboard the USS Howard which with an AEGIS system and a heavy ECM package required for carrier protection gives them considerable ability to observe what’s going on over there.  Unless of course they’re just making this all up, which would be either very unprofessional or an interesting piece of PSYOPS…

It’s also worth noting that these tanks weren’t meant for Kenya as originally reported.  Which wouldn’t be the first time an act of piracy having consequences beyond the grab for cash (cf. the Saint Patrick story)…

And in the process of making sure I got that last link posted, this came over the wires at the TIMES, an interview with the pirates themselves.  I can only imagine what Blackbeard’s press agent, given a chance to access the media,  might have had to say on behalf of his or her client…

Going on the Account: What’s Russian for “Raise the Colors and Engage”?

Looks like the Modern Age of Piracy has gotten so intense that the Russians are sending a frigate to Somalia to fight pirates preying on routes between Odessa and Kenya.  Frankly, the fact that these pirates ended up with 33 T-72 tanks as part of their booty is a scary thought to contemplate; this may not be the richest haul anyone plying the Sweet Trade has ever netted, but it has to be one of the most useful and potentially deadly.

Going on the Account: Part the Seventy Fourth

Part the Seventy Fourth is now up, and may be read here.  And my apologies to those who got the last notice via e-mail and tried to go straight to Part the Seventy Third; word didn’t come until too late that the link went to the wrong page.  If you missed the last part, which barrels into today’s with a major change of tact, it can be read here.

Going on the Account: Sails Over Burbank

The Mouse be going on the account and practicing the Sweet Trade again; Disney’s announced start of development on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN IV with Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.  For those of you keeping score at home, this makes Depp even with Errol Flynn for number of captaincies they have been elected to; the fact the Flynn went to sea under four different roles as opposed to Depp’s single character can be taken as you wish…

Going on the Account: From Pieces of Eight to Bits and Bytes

Not everyone thinks about digital piracy with the same grey cells they do traditional ship seizures (except for one time when John Kovalic did).  It now looks like the US is going to give more attention to online pirates than they are to those plaguing our seas these day, as the Justice Department starts going after IP pirates with more gusto than the US Navy seems to be doing.  Ah, progress…

Going on the Account: So THAT’S What I’ve Been Doing?

I admit it, it sometimes takes a little while for a concept to get to me (or for me to get a concept).  So my introduction to the “Bechdel Rule” didn’t happen until this was posted at io.9.  Which led to reference to this story at npr.org.  For those folks not wanting to click the links the rule is that Bechdel would only go to see a movie if it had:

1. At least two female characters, who …
2. talk to each other about…
3. something besides a man.

I would love to be able to send her a link to the novel and see if this meets with her approval…
